Group Division:

Two large groups:

• 🏡 Team A – Taking holidays near home is better.
• 🌍 Team B – Travelling abroad is better.

 

Objective

Students will use persuasive language and interactional strategies to express, defend, and challenge opinions on the advantages of local vs. international travel.

 

Stages:

🧩 1. Preparation (3 minutes)

Each team works together to:

1. Brainstorm 2–3 strong arguments supporting their side.
2. Prepare 1 counter-argument against the opposing side.
3. Choose 2–3 speakers to represent them (others support with ideas).

🎭 At the Heart of the Brazilian Carnival

 

In view of the upcoming Carnival, I felt obliged to join my friends in Rio. In response to their invitation, I booked my ticket immediately. With regard to costumes, everyone was supposed to design something colorful, and I was required to wear feathers and sequins.

 

At first, I wasn’t familiar with samba, but I soon became obsessed with its rhythm. Being involved with local dancers made me conscious of how passionate Brazilians are. They are extremely sensitive to music and movement, always prepared to dance for hours. In relation to energy, the atmosphere was electric — the trouble with such excitement is that it’s hard to rest!

 

After several nights, I got fed up with the crowds, but I wasn’t ashamed of my tired feet. I met people in connection with cultural projects who were capable of spreading joy everywhere.

 

In place of sleep, we celebrated life. In terms of memories, Carnival has nothing to do with any other festival I’ve experienced. I returned home informed of one truth: Brazil is truly in need of no excuse to dance. What a sort of magic!

3.4.- Adverbs of Degree

Green Travelling Across Switzerland

Switzerland is an absolutely magnificent country with an efficient public transport system. Travellers can visit its cities, lakes and mountains without depending on private cars. Electric trains, trams, buses, boats, bicycles and cable cars make green travelling very convenient.

Zurich is an excellent starting point. Although the city is quite busy, its public transport is reliable. Visitors can travel by electric tram or rent a bicycle. The cycle paths around Lake Zurich are fairly flat, making them suitable for many travellers. However, the trams can become completely full during the busiest hours.

From Zurich, travellers can take an electric train to Bern. The journey is extremely comfortable, and the experience is totally different from driving on a crowded motorway. Bern is rather small, so visitors can explore its historic centre on foot. Its medieval streets are really wonderful, and several areas have little or no traffic.

Lucerne is another environmentally friendly destination. Tourists can arrive by train and cross Lake Lucerne by boat. The lake may be slightly cold, but the surrounding Alpine scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Local buses also connect the city with nearby mountain attractions.

Travellers looking for outdoor activities can continue to Interlaken. From there, they can use trains, buses and cable cars to reach different hiking routes. Some trails are pretty easy, while others are extremely steep. After a long hike, visitors may feel a bit tired, but the mountain views are really unforgettable.

Zermatt is an absolutely incredible destination for green travellers because private petrol and diesel cars are not permitted. Visitors arrive by train and travel around the village on foot, by bicycle or in small electric taxis. The streets are quite peaceful during the holiday season.

Finally, Geneva can be reached by a very fast intercity train. Its electric trams, buses, shared bicycles and passenger boats make exploring the city fairly simple. By choosing these means of transport, visitors can enjoy Switzerland while keeping their environmental impact fairly low.

Nature lovers often choose to go trekking in the mountains or to go hiking through forests, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful landscapes.

 

If comfort is a priority, many travelers decide to go on a cruise, where they can eat well, sleep comfortably, and visit several countries in one trip. Families also like to go on a trip together during holidays to spend time and create memories. More adventurous people may choose to go on a journey across continents or even to go on an expedition to remote areas like the Arctic or the Amazon rainforest.

 

Sometimes travel is short and practical, like when we need to go on a flight for work or study. But whether the purpose is work, adventure, or rest, each journey brings stories to tell.

 

In the end, the best part of traveling is not only reaching the destination but also the experiences along the way. Every time we decide to go on a trip, we open the door to new opportunities, friendships, and discoveries.
